Wellington is the perfect capital city: compact, easy to get around and surprisingly scenic. Steep hills and spectacular views are interspersed with a thriving café society, and the city has often been likened to San Francisco. Part of Wellington’s charm is its close proximity to nature.
Things to do and see:
Dominating the revitalised waterfront is Te Papa, the Museum of New Zealand. You can easily spend a day enjoying these cultural exhibits and contemporary art exhibitions. Nearby is the waterfront walk along Jervois Quay and exclusive Oriental Parade, and the restaurant precinct of Courtenay Place.
Another good walk is around Lambton Quay, where you can see the restored 1876 slab and wooden planking Government buildings before jumping on the cable car that trundles up a very steep hill to Kelburn. At the top are great city views, the Botanical Gardens and Rose Gardens, the Skyline Café and the Carter Observatory. At night you can view the southern sky through telescopes in the observatory.
The central city is nestled between a beautiful harbour and forested hills, and it’s not far to the Karori Wildlife Sanctuary, the Kaitoke Regional Park or the Makara Track, a six kilometre loop that takes you to vantage points with views that make the uphill walk well worthwhile. The track returns along the wild sea coast.

Places to Visit (Attractions and Tours):
Wellington is just an hour or so from Martinborough, one of New Zealand’s top wine regions with nearly 40 small, often family-owned wineries around the Wairarapa Wine Trail. The route from Wellington takes you over the Rimutaka Ranges, with a steep and windy road, but the countryside and wild coastal scenery of Martinborough are certainly worth the drive.
It’s also just an hour to the Kapiti Coast, long a favourite weekend destination for Wellingtonians. There’s a bird reserve on Kapiti Island, with access possible on a licensed boat tour, lots of long beach walks and more walks up in the hills which overlook this stretch of coastline.
If you head west, you’ll come to the Whanganui National Park, named after New Zealand’s longest navigable river. There are jet boating trips, but the purist can take canoe and kayaking trips. The ultimate is the 145 kilometre river trip from Taumarunui to the village of Pipiriki, which takes about five days to complete by canoe or kayak. A three day journey from Whakahoro to Pipiriki is also possible.
Continue west, and you’ll arrive at Egmont National Park, with its perfectly formed volcano of Mt Taranaki. It takes about five hours to climb to the summit, but any walk through the rich native rainforest is very rewarding.
If you choose to head south from Wellington, the ferry to Picton will deliver you to the heart of the Martinborough wine region, and to some of New Zealand’s most magnificent national parks. The Abel Tasman National Park is the closest, and the walks and sea kayaking reveal the most spectacular coastal scenery.
