There are lots of roadside stalls, orchards, wineries and restaurants. Cruisers and houseboats can be hired if you’d like to explore the Hawkesbury. The Northern Beaches and Pittwater are on a beautiful stretch of coast from Manly to Palm Beach.

Circular Quay leads you to the Sydney Opera House, where a guided tour shows you the theatres and concert halls tucked under the incredible sails architecture.
Nearby are the Royal Botanical Gardens, the Art Gallery of NSW and Mrs Macquarie’s Chair, which has more wonderful vistas of the harbour. Another reminder of that era is the Queen Victoria Building built in 1898, which once housed a concert hall and the city library. It’s now a tantalising retail precinct, with three levels of stylish shops and cafes.

Try Oxford St in Paddington, the terribly chic Double Bay and Darling St in Balmain. Balmain is also a great spot for pubs and night-time entertainment, as is the somewhat raunchier Kings Cross.
