The Centre of Contemporary Art, Christchurch Art Gallery, the Arts Centre and the Canterbury Museum are all located here, making your cultural explorations delightfully simple. Christchurch is also known as the City of Gardens, and the unrivalled queen is the Botanic Gardens, established in 1863 and covering 30 hectares of landscaped gardens with significant plant collections.

Christchurch is criss-crossed by an intriguing network of lanes that reveal designer shops, cafes and restaurants so do go for a stroll when you’re in need of a coffee or a meal.

Places to Visit (Attractions and Tours):

The Alpine Pacific Triangle touring route takes you to the wine and food area of Waipara, the spa centre of Hanmer Springs and the whales and dolphins of the Kaikoura coast, with magnificent country scenery all the way.

You’ve got some tantalising choices: travel north to the famed wine region of Marlborough, west to the remote west coast, or south to New Zealand’s most spectacular mountain scenery.

Travel west, to the wild scenery of Arthur’s Pass, put your walking boots on and take a hike through some extraordinary mountain landscapes. Continue to the west coast, where the towns of Greymouth and Hokitika are known for gold mining and greenstone (New Zealand’s jade). Next are the famous Franz Josef and Fox Glaciers, then the peaks and lakes of Mt Cook, New Zealand’s highest mountain. You can return to Christchurch, or continue south to the Scottish-influenced city of Dunedin.

Travel north, for an indulgent few days of hot springs, vineyards and the great outdoors. Stop at the spa town of Hanmer Springs, then tackle the adventurous activities of St Arnaud, including river rafting, kayaking and mountain biking. Blenheim is in the heart of the vineyards of Marlborough and a region of excellent restaurants. From Blenheim, you can travel to Picton and board the inter-island ferry for Wellington on the North Island.
