Auckland is almost surrounded by the waters of two harbours (the Waitemata and the Manukau). Known as ‘The City of Sails’, Auckland’s harbourside precinct underwent a magnificent transformation when the city won and then defended the America’s Cup. In the city, you can’t help but notice the Sky Tower at 328 metres in height. Auckland is simply surrounded by top attractions that can be explored in a day or two.




Things to do and see:

A ‘must do’ to walk down Queen Street in the CBD to the harbour and the ferry terminal, then settle down for a glass of Steinlager (New Zealand’s national brew) or Sauvignon Blanc (a top drop in NZ) in one of the many chic bars and restaurants overlooking the marinas and the harbour.

A ferry ride is another ‘must do’. You could take a trip over to Devonport, one of Auckland’s very trendy seaside suburbs, or to Waiheke Island where some of New Zealand’s best (and most expensive) wines are produced and restaurants are perched on cliffs overlooking azure waters. It’s all very European.

A couple of near-city suburbs that are certainly worth a visit are Ponsonby, once a very run-down area that now has richly renovated historic houses and street upon street of wine bars, cafes, restaurants and boutiques. Then walk from top to bottom of Parnell Road in Parnell to sample more food, wine and fashion. Tamaki Drive, near Parnell, is a coastal drive around some of Auckland’s most exclusive beachside suburbs.

The Auckland Domain is close to the top of Parnell Road, and it’s a beautiful place for a quiet walk or a browse through the Auckland Museum. To catch a glimpse of your first kiwi you’ll need to head to Auckland Zoo where there’s a community of kiwis in the nocturnal house.

Places to Visit (Attractions and Tours):

You have some very tempting options. Northwards, Highway 1 will take you to the Bay of Islands, an idyllic area of beautiful beaches and great fishing. Southwards, Highway 1 will take you to Lake Taupo, a vast lake which has some of the finest trout fishing in the world. You can also include Rotorua, known for its boiling mud pools and dramatic geysers, by taking a short detour en route to Taupo

At Lake Taupo, there are plenty of lakeside walks and attractions such as the huge Huka Falls and naturally heated mineral pools. The Tongariro National Park is about an hour away, and it has one of the world’s great day walks over the Tongariro Crossing. Skiing on Mt Ruapehu from June to October is generally excellent.
Nearby are the Royal Botanical Gardens, the Art Gallery of NSW and Mrs Macquarie’s Chair, which has more wonderful vistas of the harbour. Another reminder of that era is the Queen Victoria Building built in 1898, which once housed a concert hall and the city library. It’s now a tantalising retail precinct, with three levels of stylish shops and cafes.

The Coromandel Peninsula is quite breathtaking, with its rugged volcanic hills, pristine native rainforest and more than 400 kilometres of unspoilt coastline with many tiny islands. Wine lovers don’t have to drive very far to reach the local wine regions of Kumeu, Helensville and Warkworth, while nature lovers should head just half an hour out of the city to the Waitakere Ranges where there’s a huge forest park with waterfalls, rivers, giant kauri trees and wild ocean beaches.
