Places to Visit (Attractions and Tours):

Two smaller and quieter nearby towns are historic Arrowtown and tiny Glenorchy, which are both surrounded by that movie set scenery. Drive on out to Glenorchy at the top of Lake Wakatipu about 45 minutes from Queenstown, then escape into a glorious wilderness region via the Dart River. It leads you deep into the heart of Mount Aspiring National Park.

There’s still a great deal more of New Zealand to see south of Queenstown, so just head for Highway 6 to Invercargill, Foveaux Strait and New Zealand’s southern-most point of remote Stewart Island.

Another great southern trip begins with the very scenic drive to Te Anau, with rivers and mountains providing beautiful spots for a break or some landscape photography. At Te Anau, caves, lake trips and walking tracks offer plenty of outdoor activity before you drive east to the city of Dunedin for a little Scottish heritage. You can return to Queenstown via Central Otago to Alexandra, which is the hub of the region’s rapidly increasing wine production and fruit growing industry.

North of Queenstown is New Zealand’s very English city of Queenstown. Take the scenic route, and spend a couple of days exploring the river and rainforest of the west coast, the Franz Josef and Fox Glaciers, and the historic towns of Hokitika and Greymouth.
