The Henry Jones Art Hotel, a former jam factory dating from the early 1820s, is here – do stop for a coffee because the building restoration and art is well worth a look.

But there’s plenty more to see around Hobart, which sits at the foot of Mt Wellington (snow-capped in winter) and on the edge of the huge Derwent River estuary. A drive up Mt Wellington (or a walk if you’re very fit) is another ‘must do’, because the views over Hobart, the river, ocean and countryside are quite extraordinary.

Food lovers should take a delectable tour of the Cadbury Schweppes Chocolate Factory, beer buffs should view the beer production at Cascade Brewery and wine connoisseurs should sample the cool climate Pinot Noir and fine sparkling wines which Tasmania is noted for.
